Blue Hymnal #554 — 'Tis the Gift to be Simple — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.
’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free,
’tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
and when we find ourselves in the place just right,
’twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained to bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed,
to turn, turn, will be our delight till by turning, turning we come round right.
Salutation
Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People: And blessed be God’s Kingdom, now and forever. Amen

The Collect for the Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost
Celebrant: May God be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Old Testament Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Lector: A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy.
Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.
Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17 Domine, refugium
The Psalm is read as directed, reverently pausing between the verses
[Image: Tablets of the Ten Commandments]
1 Lord, you have been our refuge *
from one generation to another.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, *
from age to age you are God.
3 You turn us back to the dust and say, *
"Go back, O child of earth."
4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past *
and like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep us away like a dream; *
we fade away suddenly like the grass.
6 In the morning it is green and flourishes; *
in the evening it is dried up and withered.
13 Return, O Lord; how long will you tarry? *
be gracious to your servants.
14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; *
so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us *
and the years in which we suffered adversity.
16 Show your servants your works *
and your splendor to their children.
17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; *
prosper the work of our hands; prosper our handiwork.
The Epistle 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
Lector: A reading from the letter to the Thessalonians
You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.
Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches.
People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Matthew 22: 15-22
Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
Celebrant: This is the Gospel of Christ.
People: Praise to you, O Christ
The Sermon Rev. Courtney Tan
After the sermon there will be a moment of silence for reflection.

The Nicene Creed
Celebrant or Leader: Let us affirm our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers of the People
Presider: God of deliverance, hear our prayers and deliver us into your kingdom as we pray,
Intercessor: Deliver your church from arrogance and fear; lead us into the places you wish us to go and into the work you wish us to do.
People: May your Holy Spirit continue to guide us.
Intercessor: Deliver this nation from division and anger; bend our ears that, united, we might work towards justice and dignity for all people.
People: Remind us that Your work is our work to do.
Intercessor: Deliver our world from indifference to the welfare of others as we negotiate new ways of being to overcome our global challenges.
People: Be with our leaders and guide them to follow in Your example.
Intercessor: Deliver all of us who hear these words from indecision and doubt, that we might boldly take up Christ’s work of healing and reconciliation as our own.
People: Strengthen our faith and give us courage.
Intercessor: Deliver all who suffer from their distress and grant them peace and a sense of well being, especially those in need in our own parish, including Linda and Janet, Jan Scott, Natalyn, Andrew, Sam, Nancy, Kit, Martha, Darlene, Jan, Maggie, Anita, Bev, Kirk, Michael, Alex, Pam, Jim, Marty, Earlene, Roberta, Bob, Joyce, Erin, Karolin, Vivian, and Andy, all those on the Daughters of the King Prayer List. I invite any other prayers of intercession or thanksgiving, silently or aloud.
You are invited to add your own petitions here . . . Silence
Lord in your mercy,
People: Grant us all peace and a sense of well being.
Intercessor: Deliver the dead into your eternal kingdom, comfort those who grieve with the hope of reuniting again one day in the resurrection.
You are invited to add your own petitions here . . . Silence
Lord in your mercy,
People: We pray for our departed family and friends.
Presider: Loving God who time and again has heard your people’s cry and lifted them from their despair; hear our prayers and lift us up that we might, more fully, be the people you created us to be and empower us for your mission of love. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
[Image: Line drawing of a dove]
Confession of Sin
Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence may be kept
Minister and People: Lord Jesus Christ, you call on your church to be a place where we can find your forgiveness.
And in our doubting in our unfaithfulness,
you offer us renewal and a share in your resurrection life.
And so we come to you with all our doubts, with all our faults
and in silence ask to know of your presence
forgiving each of us, as we forgive one another. Amen.
Absolution:
Celebrant: Almighty God, have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life, Amen.
The Peace
Celebrant: May the peace of Christ be always with you.
People: And also with you.
The Service of the Table
Celebrant: Jesus said, “Come to me all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

The Great Thanksgiving
Eucharistic Prayer 2 EOW 1
Presider: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Presider: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to God.
Presider: Let us give thanks to God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Presider: We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so, this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing:
Sanctus WLP #785
Sanctus — WLP #785 — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.
San - to, san - to, san - to, mi cor - a - zon te a - do - ra! Mi cor - a - zon te sa - be de - cir: san - to e - res Se - ñor.
Ho - ly, ho - ly, ho - ly, my heart, my heart a - dores you! My heart is glad to say the words: you are ho - ly, Lord.
The presider continues:
Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself, yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.
On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” *
As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” *
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
Celebrant and People
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or to lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.
Pour out your Spirit + upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation +, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.
In the fullness of time bring us, with St. Peter and all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Fraction Anthem EOW 1
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.
Presider: God of promise, you have prepared a banquet for us.
People: Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.
Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following invitation:
Presider: Bread and wine; God’s gift of grace to God’s beloved people.
People: May we who share these gifts be found in Christ and Christ in us.
All are welcome at God’s table.

Post-Communion Prayer
Let us pray.
[Image: Chalice and loaves of bread]
Celebrant and People: In gratitude, in deep gratitude for this moment, this meal,
these people, we give ourselves to you.
Take us out to live as changed people
because we have shared the Living Bread
and cannot remain the same.
Ask much of us, expect much of us, enable much by us,
encourage many through us.
So, God, may we live to your glory,
both as inhabitants of earth and citizens of heaven. Amen
