Welcome

Processional For all the Saints who from their labours rest. Blue Hymnal #287

Blue Hymnal #287 — For all the Saints who from their labours rest — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.

1 For all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be for ever blessed. Alleluia, alleluia!

2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might: thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light. Alleluia, alleluia!

3 O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them, the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluia, alleluia!

4 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, alleluia!

*5 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, alleluia!

*6 The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia, alleluia!

*7 But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, alleluia!

*8 From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia, alleluia!

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.. Amen.

Old Testament Revelation 7:9-17

Lector: A reading from the Book of Revelation

After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing,

"Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honor
and power and might
be to our God forever and ever! Amen."

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

"For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
the sun will not strike them,
nor any scorching heat;
for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 34:1-10, 22 Benedicam Dominum

The Psalm is read as directed, reverently pausing between the verses

1 I will bless the Lord at all times; *
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2 I will glory in the Lord; *
let the humble hear and rejoice.
3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; *
let us exalt his Name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me *
and delivered me out of all my terror.
5 Look upon him and be radiant, *
and let not your faces be ashamed.
6 I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me *
and saved me from all my troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, *
   and he will deliver them.
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; *
happy are they who trust in him!
9 Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, *
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, *
but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.
22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, *
and none will be punished who trust in him.

The Epistle 1 John 3:1-3

Lector: A reading from the first John.

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches.
People: Thanks be to God.

Day by day, dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day.

The Gospel Matthew 5:1-12

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Celebrant: This is the Gospel of Christ.
People: Praise to you, O Christ

In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Grant, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Offertory Hymn Ye holy angels bright Bue Hymnal # 625

Blue Hymnal #625 — Ye holy angels bright — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.

1 Ye holy angels bright, who wait at God’s right hand, or through the realms of light fly at your Lord’s command, assist our song, for else the theme too high doth seem for mortal tongue.

2 Ye blessed souls at rest, who ran this earthly race and now, from sin released, behold the Savior’s face, God’s praises sound, as in his sight with sweet delight ye do abound.

3 Ye saints, who toil below, adore your heavenly King, and onward as ye go some joyful anthem sing; take what he gives and praise him still, through good or ill, who ever lives!

4 My soul, bear thou thy part, triumph in God above: and with a well-tuned heart sing thou the songs of love! Let all thy days till life shall end, whate’er he send, be filled with praise.

While the people’s offerings are brought forward, the Doxology is sung.

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
   Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

Eucharistic Prayer 2 EOW 1

Presider: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Presider: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to God.
Presider: Let us give thanks to God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider: We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so, this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing:

Sanctus WLP #785

Sanctus — WLP #785 — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The presider continues:

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself, yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.

On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” *

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” *

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or to lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.

Pour out your Spirit + upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation +, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.

In the fullness of time bring us, with St. Peter and all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,
   hallowed be thy Name,
      thy kingdom come,
   thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
      for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction Anthem EOW 1

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

Presider: God of promise, you have prepared a banquet for us.
People: Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following invitation:

Presider: Bread and wine; God’s gift of grace to God’s beloved people.
People: May we who share these gifts be found in Christ and Christ in us.

All are welcome at God’s table.

All baptized persons are welcome to receive the Eucharist in the Episcopal Church. If you would prefer a blessing, please indicate this by crossing your hands across your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available, please indicate your preference when receiving the sacrament.

Communion Hymns I sing a song of the saints of God Blue Hymnal #293

Blue Hymnal #293 — I sing a song of the saints of God — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.

1 I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: they were all of them saints of God— and I mean, God helping, to be one too.

2 They loved their Lord so dear, so dear, and his love made them strong; and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake, the whole of their good lives long. And one was a soldier, and one was a priest, and one was slain by a fierce wild beast; and there’s not any reason— no, not the least, why I shouldn’t be one too.

3 They lived not only in ages past, there are hundreds of thousands still, the world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus’ will. You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea, for the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too.

Let saints on earth in concert sing. Blue Hymnal #526

Blue Hymnal #526 — Let saints on earth in concert sing — please paste a MusicXML score or upload the music image.

1 Let saints on earth in concert sing with those whose work is done; for all the servants of our King in heaven and earth are one.

2 One family we dwell in him, one Church, above, beneath, though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death.

3 One army of the living God, to his command we bow; part of the host have crossed the flood, and part are crossing now.

4 E’en now by faith we join our hands with those that went before, and greet the ever-living bands on the eternal shore.

5 Jesus, be thou our constant Guide; then, when the word is given, bid Jordan’s narrow stream divide, and bring us safe to heaven.

Post-Communion Prayer

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People: In gratitude, in deep gratitude for this moment, this meal,
these people, we give ourselves to you.
Take us out to live as changed people
because we have shared the Living Bread

Ask much of us, expect much of us, enable much by us,
   encourage many through us.
So, God, may we live to your glory,
both as inhabitants of earth and citizens of heaven. Amen
